A Generation Growing with Hong Kong Teleplay

William Lo
http://willylo-cu09.spaces.live.com/

One of my friends described me as “HK Guy”, and I strongly disapprove it in that I am not a Hong Kong guy! I am an indigenous Cantonese, but perhaps I have watched a little bit more Hong Kong Teleplay, Hong Kong Magazines and spoken with a bit more English in the speech like Hong Kong people.

I have been a TV fan since childhood. Growing up in an age of “eating with TV” which showed the importance of TV in our daily life, I have got into the habit of “eating with TV” ever since. I believe that many teenagers like me in Guangzhou do watch the four Hong Kong TV Channels instead of the CCTV nationwide-broadcast news report or the Cantonese Opera of the Guangdong TV channel.

Strangely, my family and I as ingenious Cantonese watch the Hong Kong news report inextenso besides the local news report. Possibly, we do not know that aluminum windows in Guangzhou fall down and hit any passersby, but it is not until that, this kind of accident happens in Hong Kong that we think we should be more careful in the street. Possibly, we do not know that there is class suspension for different kinds of typhoon signals, but we are very clear that Hong Kong people need not go to work on No.8 Typhoon Signal. Possibly, you are not accustomed to watching Hong Kong News Report or remembering the names of the anchors, I believe you must remember the favorite quote of Ng Fong Wing, the experienced anchor of sport news in Hong Kong, that “Ball is round”, which suggests that it is hard to predict the end of a football match and everything can happen before the closing minutes. Possibly, you do not know the Morse code of “News Today”, but when these Morse code transfers into the sound of do do do do, you know the news begins.

I seem to have intangible relationship with Hong Kong TV channels since childhood. My mom always said that at the end 1970s, every family turned the fishbone-like antenna to the southeast, where antenna can receive better signals, and the first hit song I sang was the theme song of Enjoy Yourself Tonight, which was a very popular variety show at that time. What’s more, the teleplay The Bund at the time was so popular that the restaurant business was bleak, and I, as a child born in 1980s, could not help mentioning the Flash Fax, a variety show for children. Do you still remember it? The name of this show has been changed countless time, and what remains is Lady Tam Yuk Ying who is no longer a lady anymore. Whenever she appears on the screen, she reminds the childhood memory of our generation. After all, we have grown up already. The cartoons transmitted by TVB are no longer our favor, the Cantonese translation name of Doraemon has been changed into its original Japanese name, and the Cantonese dubbing specialist of Nobita Nobi, the main character of the series and the center of the story, has passed away.

Besides the Flash Fax and TVB News, there are other many TV episodes that impress us. Hong Kong Today may not remind you too much, but you must remember the ET Anatomy, which was part of report of the show. Another long long TV episode A Kindred Spirit had been watched by me intensively from primary school of junior school. Besides, the War of the Genders, whose hero raises cockroach as his pet, persuaded successfully the girls in our class who were frightened of cockroach to raises them. I would watch the Oscar Academy Awards in live at the noon of Monday after school every year. Unfortunately, the Pearl broadcasts no such kind of ceremonies any more in daytime but becomes a shopping channel. If you do not want to yield to CCTV-6 for its ridiculous interpretation, you have to apply for the paid channels. Every year, the TVB Anniversary and the four Music Ceremonies still appeal to me, and I have never missed them once. The hotline for donating money of the Tung Wah Charity Show is 1872333, without knowing why I just remember it by heart. I used to finish my homework early at Wednesday night like other children in order to watch the Super Trio Series with gentle request. Though K-100, introducing the relative knowledge of the production of TV programs, no longer exists, I always do the reviewing job about that. By finding the useful information about producing a TV program from internet, I can apply them to my work in the campus television station.

As regards to the magazines, do you still remember the Yes! Weekly? Though Miss Sex, one of the columns in this magazine was controversial, can you deny that you have obtained physiological knowledge during your teenage days. One day, from a blog I saw that “ Growing with Yes!, it turns me from a Yes! reader who hardly knew LV into the fashion leader by magazine MILK.” It is true that I have not bought YES! for a long time, instead MILK attracts all my attention. However, every time I see in the shelf YES! which have been able to spell a picture by its different covers and piles of YES cards, it reminds me of the days when I saved all the breakfast money to buy it. Now, luckily, Guangzhou has its local fashion magazine, such as More!, local information and shopping directory, everything becomes more indigenous and comfortable. However, the interpretation of Beckham, Jordan and Arsenal in Mandarin is still unacceptable. Can we replace them with the Cantonese of translation?

People regards me as being xenocentric, which vexes me a lot, but my life is influenced by this used-to-be colony deeply from their TV, magazines to their culture. Or perhaps, this is the unique local culture of Guangzhou. I am convinced that we are not living in the shadow of other culture, never. At least, G4 carries me along with their report; At least, the typhoon report in Guangzhou no longer relies on Hong Kong’s report. At least, the ratings of Local husbands and non-local wives, a TV episode produced by Cantonese, stand at the first place for long time, comparing to the other programs broadcasted at the same time… or perhaps, many things between Hong Kong and Guangzhou are similar with each other. Though they were separated for 50 yeas towards the different development directions, they will be merged together again, I believe.

There is more and more choices of TV channels, and TVB is no longer the only option. However, after applying for the paid channels, I find that I watch them no more than half an hour and then stay in front of the TVB with the rest time (of course, excluding the time of interrupting advertisements). There are more than 10 Cantonese TV channels in Guangzhou. With great expectation, I hope that one day I will not rely so much on TVB, or perhaps at that time I can spare no time in watching TV, or TVB exists no more, but I really expect that the quality of local TV channels can surpass the Hong Kong ones. In the 1980s, Hong Kong’s radio signals no longer covered Guangdong when they changed into FM broadcast. Then the local radios got heated. However, I believe such situation would not happen in TV industry as TV stations can encounter a booming development. After all, the knowledge and demand of our people, the 30 million people in the Pearl River Delta can exceed Hong Kong, the small island, and I hold this belief more firmly than anything.

「還好嗎?」=「Hey, how r u?」

It is three hours gap.

(Professor of School of Foreign Studies, SCAU; Former Senior Visiting Scholar of Cambridge University)的Email,覺得好感動。

R先生:「Are you really want to do accounting?」

From the Internet:

From Latter Days:
「Could be worse, could be raining.」
「We are colors and white, we don’t mix.」
「We are all connected.」
「What if you are the one that I have been waiting for my whole life and I let you go.」

Bollywood
